The Patriot’s Pavement: A Colourful Controversy in England’s Oldest Town

A double mini-roundabout in Abingdon has become the canvas for a vibrant display of patriotism, sparking debate among locals and traffic authorities. England flags, specifically the red St George’s Crosses, were painted on the road islands and white lines, coinciding with the excitement of the football Euros. This act of national pride, however, has had a messy side effect: passing cars have spread the paint across the road, raising concerns about road safety and public property.

Oxfordshire County Council, the highway authority, has acknowledged the issue, noting that similar paintings are happening nationwide. A spokesperson for the council stated that while they are aware of the situation, any action would be based purely on road safety considerations, not on the nature of the painting itself. Thames Valley Police have been approached for a comment, but have yet to provide advice on the matter of painting public roads.

The topic has even made its way into political discourse. Downing Street has voiced the Prime Minister’s “absolute” support for people displaying English flags. The official spokesman for Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the opposition, also emphasised the importance of British patriotism, referencing the tradition of putting up English flags at Downing Street during significant sporting events, particularly for the men’s and women’s national teams.

While the patriotic sentiment is clear, this incident raises questions about the line between expressing national pride and unauthorised modification of public property. The Abingdon roundabouts have become the centre of a painted controversy, highlighting how patriotism and public regulations can sometimes collide on the road.
