🕯️ Olena Vladymyrets: The 95-year-old volunteer who lived for peace

Olena Vladymyrets, Ukraine’s oldest volunteer, passed away on July 26 at the age of 95. She not only survived the horrors of the Holodomor and two wars, but in her final years, she actively fought for peace in her homeland. Olena Vladymyrets’s story has become a symbol of perseverance and hope, setting an example for many.

Together with her daughter, she supported the soldiers fighting on the front lines through volunteer work. They made trench candles, which provided life-saving assistance. These simple but incredibly useful tools were made from cardboard placed in empty cans and filled with paraffin. They provided light, warmth, and even the ability to heat food without their smoke revealing the soldiers’ position. In addition, they also helped the soldiers with dried herbs.

Olena’s greatest dream was that these candles would never be needed again. This statement perfectly summarises her spirit: her unwavering belief in peace. Although she is no longer with us physically, her memory and the heartfelt dedication with which she worked for her country will live on forever.

Her story is an inspiration to all who believe in the power of love, perseverance, and peace. Olena Vladymyrets’s memory reminds us that age cannot stop us from serving good and giving hope to others.
