Devastating Tsunami Waves Hit Japan After Massive Russian Earthquake

Yesterday, July 30, devastating tsunami waves struck the eastern coasts of Japan following an extremely powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that shook Russia’s Far Eastern coastline.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an immediate tsunami alert at 8:37 AM yesterday. The earthquake’s epicentre was near the Kamchatka Peninsula, in the Petropavlovsk region, and a widespread tsunami warning was issued for numerous Pacific regions, including Hawaii, southern Alaska, the entire west coast of the United States, and British Columbia, Canada, as reported by Fox News.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov stated that the earthquake was exceptionally strong. Sergey Lebedev, the region’s emergency minister, reported that waves of 3-4 meters hit some parts of Kamchatka. Oleg Melnikov, Kamchatka’s health minister, confirmed several injuries, though fortunately no severe cases were reported. Some individuals fell while fleeing, one patient panicked and jumped out a window, and a woman was injured at a new airport terminal.

Russian emergency authorities reported that the port of Severo-Kurilsk in the Sakhalin Islands, as well as a nearby fish processing plant, were partially submerged, and residents were evacuated. A local kindergarten was also damaged, but the ministry stated that most buildings withstood the earthquake, and fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.

In Japan, evacuation orders were issued for numerous eastern coastal towns, and authorities urged people to immediately move to higher ground. The Japanese meteorological service had forecast waves of up to 3 meters. The US tsunami forecasting system indicated that waves of up to 3 meters could form along some parts of the Russian coast, while 1–3 meter waves were expected in Japan, Hawaii, Chile, and the Solomon Islands. US President Donald Trump also warned on social media about the tsunami in Hawaii, Alaska, the US Pacific coast, and Japan. California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that warnings were in effect for parts of California’s northern coast.

Several coastal areas in Hawaii were ordered to evacuate, with Governor Josh Green urging people to immediately leave affected areas. The Honolulu emergency service also called for “immediate action” on X, warning of devastating waves.

Interestingly, Japanese manga artist Ryo Tatsuki had years ago depicted a scene where a tsunami three times larger than the 2011 event would strike Japan on July 5, 2025. Although the date was slightly off, the extraordinary prediction proved chillingly accurate.
