Strawberry Sky Waterfall: A Culinary Experience in the Clouds in China

China is home to a unique culinary innovation: a restaurant where hydroponic strawberries grow directly above the tables. At the “Strawberry Sky Waterfall,” guests can pick fresh berries from a height-adjustable system while enjoying a hot meal. Part of a larger hydroponic farm, the restaurant uses smart technology to optimise the growing environment, ensuring the freshness and accessibility of the strawberries. This facility in Tangqi village blends the hotpot experience with a unique strawberry-picking activity, quickly becoming a popular tourist attraction.

According to founder Cao Mei Jun, the concept was enhanced with nearly 20 years of cultivation experience, significantly boosting berry yields. Hydroponic cultivation, which grows plants without soil using a nutrient-rich water solution, is highly eco-friendly: it uses up to 80% less water and eliminates the need for pesticides or chemical fertilisers. This method delivers ultra-fresh, healthy produce directly to the consumer’s table.

China is a pioneer in applying hydroponic farming in urban settings, shortening supply chains and reducing transport emissions. Restaurants like this offer an interactive, enjoyable experience for families while contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for the hospitality industry. It attracts an average of over 500 visitors daily, predominantly women and children.
