Chinese Military Robotics Lab Develops Mosquito-Sized Microdrone for Covert Operations

A robotics laboratory at the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) in China has recently unveiled a revolutionary mosquito-sized drone designed for covert military operations. Showcased on CCTV 7, China Central Television’s military channel, these tiny bionic robots are ideally suited for reconnaissance and special battlefield missions.

Liang Hexiang, a student at NUDT, demonstrated the drone by holding it between his fingers, emphasising its incredibly small size. The device features a stick-shaped body with leaf-like wings and hair-thin legs. Despite its minuscule proportions, the drone incorporates sensors, power devices, and control circuits, requiring a multidisciplinary collaboration in its development, including microscopic device engineering, materials science, and bionics.

This development highlights the growing trend of massed drone deployments as part of China’s military modernisation. While the Norwegian-developed, palm-sized Black Hornet microdrone is already widely used by armed forces globally for reconnaissance, NUDT’s new robot signifies the next frontier in microbotics, holding promise not only for military applications but also for medical research.
