Is it worth upgrading to premium economy on Emirates?

Emirates was a latecomer to the premium economy game, only introducing the class in 2022. Previously, travellers were limited to standard economy or business class. The airline’s aim is to offer a more luxurious experience across its fleet. Currently, 72 aircraft, including Airbus A380s, Boeing 777s, and some A350s, have been outfitted with premium economy seats, available on 38 routes, including New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Dubai, and Tokyo.

But is the significant extra cost justified? A return flight to Dubai booked 12 weeks in advance costs £625 in economy, while premium economy comes in at £1,573. While the price difference is substantial, premium economy offers enhanced comfort and additional perks. These include a dedicated check-in desk, and though lounge access isn’t standard, it can be added for a fee.

Onboard, the 2-4-2 configuration means seats are a significantly wider 19.5 inches, with quilted leather and up to 40 inches of legroom, making a real difference for comfort and sleep. The cabin feels luxurious with wood panelling, drinks served in glassware, and stainless steel cutlery. While specific dietary requests like vegetarian meals might require pre-ordering and can be a bit challenging, Emirates’ service remains consistently flawless.

Ultimately, the most valuable aspect of premium economy is the space. On a seven-hour flight, this level of comfort truly makes a difference. While Emirates already offers an excellent economy class, many might balk at the prospect of paying an extra £900. However, the value provided in premium economy, with its superior comfort and amenities, might even lead some to prefer it over business class, if affordability were not a factor.
