The Ravens Guard the Monarchy: New Chicks at the Tower of London

An ancient legend holds that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the British monarchy will fall. This belief is deeply rooted in British folklore and the history of the Tower, so much so that for centuries, special care has been taken to ensure the well-being of the ravens.

Well, it seems we don’t have to worry about the future of the monarchy for a while, as two new raven chicks, Henry and Poe, recently arrived at the Tower of London. The little newcomers were born this April as part of the Tower’s own raven breeding program, which aims to ensure the survival of the population. The two chicks have already joined the six other adult ravens originally living there. This brings the total number to eight, well exceeding the minimum of six ravens required by the legend.

The ravens have become one of the most recognizable symbols of the Tower of London. Their care is overseen by the Ravenmaster, who is chosen from among the Yeoman Warders (the Tower guards, also known as Beefeaters). The birds receive special treatment and often attract tourists curious about the legend and the birds’ daily lives. Henry and Poe’s arrival not only reinforces tradition but also offers hope for the long-term stability of the monarchy—at least according to the legend.
