Canada’s Dazzling Spotted Lake: The Mystery of Kliluk Lake
In the western part of Canada, in British Columbia, lies a truly unique and mysterious lake known as Kliluk Lake, often referred to as “Spotted Lake.” During the summer, as the water evaporates, minerals – including sulfates, magnesium, and calcium – are left behind on the lake’s surface, forming vibrant, circular pools of colour. These “spots” can range from yellow and green to blue, depending on the concentration of minerals within them.
For the Okanagan Nation, the lake is a sacred site, known as “Khiluk,” and they have attributed healing powers to the different coloured pools for centuries. Each spot is believed to possess different medicinal properties.
Kliluk Lake is not only a stunning visual spectacle, but also a natural wonder that offers a glimpse into the region’s unique geological and cultural heritage. Although part of the lake is on private land and inaccessible, a breathtaking view of this extraordinary natural phenomenon can be enjoyed from the adjacent highway.
