Don’t Get Grounded: The REAL ID Deadline is Approaching!
Mark your calendars! Starting May 7, 2025, the rules for boarding domestic flights and accessing certain federal facilities in the United States are changing. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued identification documents. This means that on and after this date, your standard state-issued driver’s license or identification card might not be enough.
To ensure you can continue to travel domestically by air and enter federal buildings requiring identification, you’ll need to have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card. These compliant cards are typically marked with a star in the upper portion of the card.
The good news is that there are other forms of identification that are already REAL ID compliant. A valid U.S. passport book or passport card will be accepted. So, if you already have one of these, you’re all set!
Don’t wait until the last minute to figure out if your ID is compliant. Check your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent agency) website for information on how to obtain a REAL ID. Make sure you have the necessary documentation to avoid any travel disruptions come May 7, 2025!
