Important Change for U.S. Domestic Flights: The Introduction of REAL ID in 2025
Effective May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act will go into effect in the United States, tightening the requirements for identification documents used for domestic flights. This change stems from the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and its goal is to enhance security.
Key Information:
- REAL ID Requirement:
- Passengers aged 18 and older will need REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or identification cards for domestic flights and to enter federal buildings.
- If a driver’s license or identification card does not meet REAL ID requirements, another TSA (Transportation Security Administration)-accepted form of identification will be required.
- Alternative Documents:
- U.S. or foreign passport
- U.S. passport card
- Permanent Resident Card
- Border Crossing Card
- USCIS-issued Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
- Other TSA-approved documents.
- Checking for REAL ID:
- Check the upper right corner of your driver’s license or identification card. If a star is visible, the document is already REAL ID-compliant.
- If there is no star, you will need to obtain a REAL ID.
Recommendations:
- If you frequently fly domestically within the U.S. or regularly visit federal buildings, check the validity of your identification documents and obtain a REAL ID if necessary.
- Stay informed about the latest information, as regulations may change.
